Pre-war Penthouse
New York City
To give the apartment greater expansiveness, the turning stair acts as a pivot point, reorienting one from the lower level, oriented north-south, to the upper level, oriented east-west. The master suite and boy’s rooms are hidden just behind the central stair. The study, with custom teak desks and flannel wall panels, creates a warm niche behind a large sliding wall panel off the entry gallery. Teak battens line the gallery and wrap up the curved stair to the dining room. On the upper level, the living and dining areas are bracketed by the kitchen on the east and a small “jewel box” sitting room and powder room on the west, lined in high-gloss purple and gray lacquer, respectively.
